Nightingale Lane

I called Zach and Emily as soon as I got up that morning. Zach sounded seriously depressed, like he’d just been told he’d caught some terrible disease. “We’re going to the other side,” he said.

“What?” I thought of old horror movies where people sat in dark circles tracing fingers across Ouija boards as smoky ghosts lurked in the gloom behind them.

“You know, taking the ferry over, going off the island. Our mom wants to go shopping,” Emily said, her voice quieter as she spoke on their other phone. “Call Jacob. Maybe you guys can go check out Baby Island while we’re gone.”

“Or,” Zach added, “they could wait for us to get back. I checked, there's a low tide tonight just after seven. We could get Violet to take us there.”

“I don’t think we should tell anyone else about this,” I said. Especially not their sister.

“We’re not going to tell her a thing,” Zach said, “she’ll just drive us to the beach, then she’ll wander off to meet her stupid boyfriend. She won’t care what we’re doing. Trust me.”

“You really think she’ll take us?” I asked.

“Yep,” Emily said, “we’ve got dirt on her.”

“Serious dirt,” Zach added. “Right now we could make her do almost anything we want. It’s like owning a robot. Or a zombie. Or a robot zombie. It’s pretty neat.”

“Nice,” I said, wondering how I could get serious dirt on Jamie too.

“Call Jacob and tell him to be at our place by six thirty. We’ll definitely be back by then,” Zach said. “Mom’s got yoga tonight, and she never misses it so we’ll be on that five o’clock ferry come what may.”

“Okay, I’ll see you later, I guess,” I said. I shivered as I thought of the ferry and crossed my fingers that they’d make it back safely without any run-ins with the octopus or Captain Grimdire. They were both out there. Somewhere.
